Bergen, historically Bjørgvin, is a city and municipality in Vestland county on the west coast of Norway. As of 2021, its population is roughly 285,900. Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway.
London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of about 9 million. It stands on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of a 80 km estuary down to the North Sea, and has been a major settlement for two millennia.
Santiago de Compostela i situated in northwestern Spain. The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. In 1985, the city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, with an urban area of 2.7 million people, the 11th largest in the European Union. Lisbon lies along the Atlantic coast in the western Iberian Peninsula.
Ibiza is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea. Ibiza is well known for its nightlife and electronic dance music club scene in the summer, which attract large numbers of tourists. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Sicily is the largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea, with 5 million inhabitants. Its capital city is Palermo. Its most prominent landmark is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe at currently 3,357 m.
Cyprus is an island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is geographically in Western Asia, but its cultural ties and geopolitics are overwhelmingly Southeastern European. The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Its capital and largest city is Nicosia.
Haifa, known locally as Akko or Akka, is a city in the coastal plain region of the Northern District of Israel. The city occupies a strategic location, sitting in a natural harbour at the extremity of Haifa Bay on the coast of the Mediterranean’s Levantine Sea. Haifa was an important city during the Crusades, and was the site of several battles.
Jerusalem is a city in Western Asia, situated on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world, and is considered to be a holy city for the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. The part of Jerusalem called the City of David shows first signs of settlement in the 4th millennium BCE, in the shape of encampments of nomadic shepherds.
Stages of the Journey
We will embark to sail the same route as did King Sigurd Jorsalfare and his 60 ships with 6000 men in AD 1108-1110.
